Carmenere is an ancient Bordeaux variety, one of the six original Bordeaux grapes. The Carmenere vines were wiped out in Europe by the phyollexera epidemic in the 1860's. However, due to the geographic isolation of the southern part of South America, the phyollexera never showed up and Chile is now one of the largest producers of Carmenere in the world.
